FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WRSU-FM -- This Fall, Rutgers Radio features the return of two long-running shows and a more freeform sound

New Brunswick, New Jersey, October 14, 2011

As fall begins the little radio station with the big reputation, WRSU-FM New Brunswick, puts the finishing touches on a new broadcast schedule. For over 60 years Rutgers Radio has been a favorite among radio listeners because it sounds like no other radio station. Many styles of music can be heard including rock, metal, electronic, jazz, country, blues, world and hip-hop. WRSU-FM offers a wide array of community and cultural programming, including live broadcasts of all Rutgers Sports events during the school year featuring Rutgers student voices doing play by play and sports talk shows.

WRSU-FM is a non-commercial, non-profit, educational student-run college radio station that also includes Rutgers alumni and members of the surrounding community as broadcast staff. This unique mix of talent allows for great change and variety in programming while offering many long-running shows to listeners, largely represented by community and cultural affairs and specialty shows. Starting this fall, two community member shows have returned to their long-held time slots.

Jazz from the Hub with host John J. Cooper returns to Friday mornings from 8-11am, the morning time slot that was home to this show for over 13 years. Little more than two years ago he was asked to move to Monday evenings. "At first it felt a bit off kilter to do the "Hub" at night," said Cooper, "but after a while I adjusted. When approached to move back to Friday, I had to go back." The show has a solid following not only among jazz fans but also on campus. "It was always exciting to know that people who may not consider themselves jazz fans were listening. I like to think that I turned more than a few people on to the beauty and full spectrum of this great American art form," says Cooper. "If nothing else I'm a keeper of the flame." This fall Jazz from the Hub celebrates its 20th anniversary on the air, making it one of the longest running jazz radio programs in New Jersey!

Another WRSU-FM programming staple returning to Fridays is Sonido Tropical. Hosted each Friday night from 6-8 pm since 1987 by Tony Jose Gonzalez, this popular show plays a diverse selection of Latino music including Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata. Calling it a "perfect combination for WRSU-FM's community and cultural programming," Gonzalez adds that this move completes the Friday night Latino music tradition alongside Ultra son Latino, featuring rock en Espanol. "Being on WRSU-FM is a great opportunity to continue doing a service for a community that appreciates variety."

Alex Gulbin, WRSU-FM General Manager, is especially pleased with the new lineup. "Rutgers Radio is a place where students can learn about radio, play any type of music they want, and immerse themselves in our massive selection of new and local music. Specialty shows such as Jazz from the Hub and Sonido Tropical offer a mix of music and talent unique to WRSU-FM. Our programming sets us apart from other radio stations and offers an entertaining and diverse listening experience you can't get anywhere else!"
